The Honeymoons

After all the excitement of the wedding it was to relax, take it easy, and enjoy a well earned break to get away from it all and where's the best place to go to do absolutely nothing? ......................... of course, it can only be ...........

THE MALDIVES

We decided that after the awesome high of the wedding it seemed silly that we go away on the honeymoon straight away and when we return we come back down with a bump with nothing to look forward too. So we booked the honeymoon for 5 months later in October instead. Now we had something else too look forward too.

We left a cold, wet, miserable Manchester Airport and jetted off to the hot, sunny and extremely laid back capital of the Maldives, Male. We stayed at a little island (and we are talking very little here) called Meedhupparu Island Resort. This is basically a tiny island with a hotel on it situated 136km northeast of Male and is only accessible by either boat or as in our case a 45 minute seaplane trip. It was as small and secluded as it sounds!

Meedhupparu is the only resort island in the North Maalhosmadulu Atoll (or Raa Atoll). In the Maldives the size of an island is traditionally measured in the time it takes to walk around its perimeter so in the case Meedhupparu, the island is 20 minutes big.

Not too much to report about our time on 'the island', well not much that can be reported here anyway. We did plenty lounging around, sun bathing, snorkelling, we visited a nearby community, the usual stuff.

We decided that after the hectic time surrounding the wedding we would take a short mini honeymoon and headed off to Scotland for a few days. We started by driving up to Perth where we stayed for one night in a hotel by the name of The Isle of Skye Inn. Now before all you geography experts email in we know its nowhere near the Isle of Skye as that's miles away! The hotel was very nice and was right on the River Tay.

The next day we started off to Wick via the Caithness Glass Factory and called in their visitor centre, and yes we know its in Perthshire not Caithness but its an interesting place and they had a place in Wick, which is in Caithness.

Further up towards Wick and it was time to stop off in the Glen of Tranquillity to the Glenmorangie Distillery, well it would be criminal not to stop as its only 20 metres from the road. We didn't buy any whisky, no honest, we didn't fill the boot or anything. On to Wick

and a night in Mackays Hotel by the river.  A very old and prestigious hotel, very well presented and the pride of Wick for many a year. Its a triangular shaped building with the entrance to the restaurant on the pointy end which also forms the entire length of the shortest street in the world, Ebenezer Place, which at 6ft 9 inches has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records. Oh, and there's a distillery in Wick too, Old Pulteney. Seems to be a theme developing here. Anyway after visiting friends and relatives it was time to head home and face to 500 and odd miles back. Its a long drive but the scenery ...... well you have to see it for yourself.

We stopped in Sterling for lunch at the National Wallace Monument, no sign of Mel Gibson, he was probably away touching up his makeup. Last stop on the way home was a look at the modern engineering marvel that is the Falkirk Wheel. This amazing place is more than just an attraction its a work of art. Nice to see that 'form and function' has not been replaced by 'function' as most things these days. There are many pictures of this trip in the Photo Album, which can be found through the link at the top.
